Waterford Union High School Prepares Students for:

College

ACT/SAT Information

All Waterford Union High School students will take a state-mandated ACT in early spring of their junior year. This test is offered during the school day and is a college reportable score. In addition, students may register with ACT to take the ACT on a National Test Date. Colleges will use the best score for admission purposes when applying to colleges in senior year.

The ACT measures the knowledge, understanding, and skills that you have acquired throughout your education. Therefore the best preparation for the test is successful completion of rigorous college preparatory courses at Waterford Union High School. This includes a minimum of 3 or more years of math, science, social studies, and 4 years of English. Four years of math, science, and social studies is highly recommended.

Apprenticeship

Apprenticeship is post-secondary education like a college or university. But there’s a big difference. Apprentices learn only a portion of their skills in a traditional classroom. They receive most of their training on-the-job, while working for an employer who pays a good wage. The employment is the primary requirement for an apprenticeship – a job must exist in order for the apprentice to be trained. The classroom instruction is usually provided through the Wisconsin Technical College system.

Career Exploration

Waterford Union High School encourages Juniors and Seniors to explore post-secondary education and career options. Up to two (2) days may be excused for this purpose and not count against your 10-day excused absence limit for Exam exemptions. When this completed form is submitted, your attendance will be changed to College Visit (CV). This form may be used for visits to colleges, universities, technical schools, military recruiters and/or job shadowing opportunities.

Department of Workforce Development

The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) is a state agency charged with building and strengthening Wisconsin’s workforce in the 21st century and beyond.

The Department’s primary responsibilities include providing job services, training and employment assistance to people looking for work, at the same time as it works with employers on finding the necessary workers to fill current job openings.

XELLO (formally Career Cruising) is available for WUHS students to explore a variety of post-secondary options. Interest testing, post-secondary school searches, and information on hundreds of careers are available at the click of a button through XELLO.

WUHS students will use XELLO in the classroom and in individual meetings with their counselors. Students will have every opportunity to explore post-secondary options, research careers, and build an Individual Learning Plan in XELLO throughout their 4 years here at WUHS.

Students must be logged into their WUHS Google Account to access XELLO.

Gateway Technical College High School programs

These classes will take place during the school day, allowing students to leave to attend courses off campus. This is a free option (students may be charged tuition if courses are not completed successfully) available for students to earn college credit. Applications are due May 15, but students who turn in their applications before March 1 will be given priority. There are currently six programs available that we will be offering. These courses can save you between $1,200 – $2,300. Contact Mrs. Meyer for an application!

Student and Family Assistance Program

We know that a healthy home and family life helps to nurture academic excellence. To promote healthy homes, minds and families, the Waterford School District is proud to offer the Student and Family Assistance Program (SFAP) through Aurora Healthcare at no charge to all Waterford School District students and families residing in the same household.

This program provides students and families up to six goal-focused confidential professional counseling, consultation, or intervention sessions per family member, per issue to address personal, family or environmental factors that impact academic performance or personal well being.

Sponsored by the Employee Assistance Program of Aurora Health Care, the counselors of the Student and Family Assistance Program have been serving Wisconsin families for more than 25 years.

HOW IT WORKS:

Help begins when a family member or legally responsible adult calls the program. Based on your needs, Aurora specialists will:

• Connect you by phone with a professional counselor who will consult with you.

• Schedule a confidential appointment with a program counselor for you or your family. Many times, a family’s concerns can be resolved within program sessions, saving time and money.

• Assist with an insurance or community based referral, if your situation requires further treatment or additional resources.

All services are confidential. No information about you or your family situation will be shared with school personnel without your permission.

WHEN TO USE THE PROGRAM:

This varies from person to person. Generally, it’s wise to seek help when a problem:

• Interferes with normal activities

• Occupies too much of your time

• Persists for more than several weeks

TYPICAL CONCERNS MAY INCLUDE:

• Academic pressures

• Alcohol/drug issues

• Anxiety and depression

• Child/family issues

• Divorce/blended families

• Marital/relationship issues

• Parenting issues and questions

• Stress management

COACHING FOR BEHAVIOR CHANGES

The program also offers coaching for students and families at the middle and high school level who are going through behavior changes. Topics for coaching sessions include:

• Anger Management

• Rethinking Drinking

• Coping with Stress, Anxiety & Change

• Marijuana Use

Work Permits

The Department of Workforce Development's Equal Rights Division has developed a new online work permit application tool. The online application will be available to the parents of minors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from any computer, tablet, smartphone, or similar device. You can access the site at https://dwd.wisconsin.gov/er/laborstandards/workpermit/. Payment is made directly to the department through the application, using a credit or debit card or by ACH direct withdrawal. Once the permit application process is complete, the Department mails a paper copy of the permit directly to the employer.

Special Needs Resource Fair

The Special Needs Resource Fair will take place on Tuesday, April 15 from 4:30pm-7:00pm at Union Grove Elementary School. There will be 80+ agencies with information for people from birth to beyond 18.

Get ready for summer learning! We're thrilled to offer summer school again this year. Check out our course catalog for exciting classes and schedules. The Summer School Enrollment form is due May 23, 2025. Please review our attendance and behavior policies on the last pages of the catalog. Gateway’s Dual Credit Programs let you get a jump on your college career while you’re in high school.

2025–26 FAFSA® Form Now Available

The 2025–26 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form is now available. You can complete the form to apply for financial aid for attendance at college or career school between July 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026.

If you successfully submitted your FAFSA form during the beta testing period, you don’t need to resubmit it.

FAFSA forms submitted online will typically be processed in one to three days. Once your form is processed, you’ll be able to review your FAFSA Submission Summary and your FAFSA information will be made available to your selected schools.

You also can make updates or corrections (such as adding a school or a missing signature) to your FAFSA form.

Prepare To Fill Out the 2025–26 FAFSA® Form

Here are some ways you can get ready to fill out your FAFSA form:

Create a StudentAid.gov account (if you don’t already have one).
Learn about the documents you may need to fill out the FAFSA form.
Determine your dependency status and whether your parent(s) or spouse will be required to contribute information on your FAFSA form.
If you’re a dependent student, use the Who’s My FAFSA Parent? wizard to identify which parent(s) will be a required contributor on your form.
